Ever since I got pregnant with Ella I've been looking for ways to eliminate toxins and harmful chemicals from our lives. It started with diapers. I read an article about how disposable diapers contain ingredients that could cause reactions like rashes and in some extreme cases, chemical burns. I know that most people think that I'm paranoid but knowing that I have crazy sensitive skin, there was a good chance my baby would too. I was right. From the beginning we have only been able to use natural or organic diapers (Babyganics is our favorite) or she will almost instantly get a rash.

Around the same time I began looking into what goes into our personal care products. I've struggled with acne my entire adult life and have used everything from harsh chemical treatments to straight coconut oil and no matter what my skin only seemed to get worse and worse.

I started doing some research into what goes into our products that we use every day and let me tell you, what I found shook me to my core. Things like lead in lipstick, and carcinogens in baby soaps and so many other horrible ingredients linked to everything from fertility issues to cancer. The industry is largely un-regulated so there are essentially no rules when it comes to ingredients, marketing, and reporting adverse reactions. I'm not going to bore you with all of the statistics but a quick google of the terms "parabens and phthalates" should make you squirm a bit.

I became kind of obsessive about checking ingredient labels. It was exhausting and stressful and I kept hitting brick walls because I would find a product that claimed to be natural and organic and then I would find out that it hid it's harmful ingredients behind the term "fragrance"- which is known as a trade secret, meaning that companies don't have to disclose what they use to make up their fragrance. It could be any of 3000 different potentially harmful ingredients and there is literally no way to know which ones are in there.

I thought about making my own products but since I'm the opposite of crafty I landed on some natural and organic brands that worked ok but not great. I was missing that high performance factor that my high end skincare and makeup had but at least my products were "safe."

Randomly one day a girl (who is now one of my favorite people in the world) sent me some samples of Beautycounter. I let it sit for weeks before I actually pulled it out and tried it. I had tried everything so why would this be any different? Once I finally got around to using the charcoal bar sample I was hooked after two days. I could actually see my skin detoxing with each wash! The charcoal mask pushed me over the edge. I literally had never seen anything like it! I signed up as a consultant that week - something I had sworn I would never ever do. That's how much I loved the products and I was so excited that I had finally found a company that I could completely trust. No more reading ingredient labels, no more allergic reactions to "natural" products with hidden ingredients!

Now I'm 6 months in and I could not be more confident in my decision. I have yet to find a product that I'm not in love with and I've been welcomed into a community of like minded people who have a heart for getting the word out about how dangerous the beauty industry is and how there is a better way!

I've also found freedom in the knowledge I've gained to branch out and try products from other like-minded companies. Now that I know what ingredients to avoid it makes makeup shopping fun again! You'll see some of my non-beautycounter faves make their appearances here on the blog as well!

If you've been on the hunt for some safer products, look no further. I am so so pleased with everything that Beautycounter comes up with and I have tried SO MANY different brands that I can confidently say that Beautycounter has them all beat on safety AND preformance which is a crazy accomplishment!
